Why I Am Running for Re-Election to Niagara-on-the-Lake Town Council

Our community is at a crossroads (p. 1). As we look toward the future, Niagara-on-the-Lake is facing crucial decisions about managing growth, upgrading our infrastructure, supporting agriculture, and preserving our unique heritage.

Navigating these challenges requires thoughtful, balanced, and steady leadership (p. 1). That is why I have officially decided to seek re-election to Town Council in the 2026 municipal election.

“I care deeply about this community and the people who call it home. Experience, perspective, and steady leadership matter now more than ever.”

Gary Burroughs

A Proven Track Record of Public Service

I have dedicated over three decades to municipal and regional government (p. 1). My journey serving you includes:

  • Town Councillor (2018 – Present)

  • Lord Mayor of Niagara-on-the-Lake (10-year tenure)

  • Regional Chair of Niagara Region (2010 – 2014), where I managed an $830 million budget and an organization of over 3,000 employees.

Bringing Business Experience to Governance

Effective governance requires fiscal responsibility. Beyond my political background, I am a Chartered Accountant (FCPA, FCA) and operated the Oban Inn for over 30 years (p. 1). This blend of financial, business, and tourism experience shapes my realistic approach to long-term planning and community sustainability.

Deep Roots in Our Community

Niagara-on-the-Lake has given so much to my family and me. Over the years, I have been honoured to support local organizations like the Niagara Parks Commission and the Shaw Festival, and to be recognized as Citizen of the Year. It would be an absolute privilege to continue serving you to ensure our town remains a wonderful place to live, work, and invest.
